Much emphasis is currently placed on ‘clearing the clutter’ on television and lifestyle magazines, it seems every Sunday supplement has pictures of little pastel coloured boxes with the odd feather boa or string of coordinating beads sticking out, which seemingly offer the solution to all our storage problems - don’t these people have piles of other stuff like the rest of us? A gotta have it top from Asda, a pair of funky, not to be missed sequinned flip flops from Tesco, all add to our already groaning wardrobes. The style gurus advise that when something new comes in, something old should go out, which is all very well for the ‘change your entire wardrobe every season’ lot, but has little to do with the rest of us. Real life is very different. Usually reality means a standard 3’ wardrobe crammed with 10’ of clothes, and what about boots, scarves, belts, I could go on.. Lack of hanging and storage space is a fundamental problem in our British homes. The Americans build into their homes as a matter of course, a closet storage system which allows organisation and tidiness. The Italians send all their winter clothes away to be laundered and stored in Summer, taking away the need for large closets. What is the solution? Look around your bedroom. Do you have a wardrobe with masses of space above that attracts dust and spiders? Inside that wardrobe, do your tops and skirts hang with masses of space below wasted down to the floor? Are shoes and bags spilling out to clutter up the corners of the room? In a well planned wardrobe, every space should be usefully filled, with floor to ceiling shelving, dedicated hanging space for short and longer things, shelves for bags, fleeces, jeans, and of course, space for shoes. Only in a built in wardrobe will you achieve this wonderful organisation. Even the TV and video, major culprits for attracting dust, can be hidden behind doors, visible only when you require them. Having dealt with the inside, you can then think about the outside of your new wardrobe.
